By contract the BCEA employees were to receive a 1.25% COLA increase July 1st. Because of the computer matrix, each BCEA employee actually received a 1.20% COLA increase. We are entitled to another .75% of total BCEA salaries in adjustments. That figure has been increased to .80% to make up for the .05% from the COLA increases. The BCEA Benchmark/salary Survey Committee has been meeting with the City and we are close to a settlement. As soon as the figures become available, we will put out a special bulletin with all of the details!
AFSCME, in keeping with its commitment to educate the leaders of tomorrow, will be providing 15 awards to the Presidential Classroom for Young Americans program in 1999. This nonpartisan, nonprofit education organization offers an exceptional civic education opportunity. Fifteen children of AFSCME members will participate in an exciting Special-Focus Week on Business, Labor, and Public Policy February 27 - March 6, 1999. The program includes seeing Congress in action, seminars on the workings of government conducted by some of the nation's most influential leaders, discussion and debate sessions on current issues, and visits to Washington's famous monuments, museums, and memorials. The award covers the cost of transportation, tuition, rooom-and-board, and materials.

The City has established a time bank for Beverly Starleaf, Administrative Secretary in the Library. Beverly has been out sick with a catastrophic illness and has mandated a leave of absence beyond her accrued balances of sick leave and vacation. If you are interested in donating some of your leave or vacation time to this time bank, stop by the Employees Relations Division in Human Resources.
The PERS Board of Administration is currently holding its election. Each member should have received a ballot at home. The BCEA is endorsing Jack Petrosino in this election.
