A celebration of spring came in the form of a lesson bees at the Burbank Central Library on Thursday as part of the Story Craft program.
Children's librarian Hubert Kozak read the children a variety of bee-related stories, including Aesop's fable of the bear and the bee and Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milen's stories about honey.
"We thought a lesson on bees was just very appropriate for spring." Kozak said.
Students also watched a video, "The Life of the Bee," about how bees make honey. When the lights came up, amateur beekeeper Clyde Steese was there in full keeper garb. He showed the children sections from his hives and bees in a jar.
The afternoon's art project included making a beeswax candle and Mother's Day card.
The children also got to taste samples of different honey, including alfalfa, clover, orange, thistle, sage and eucalyptus.
"It really brings it home for the kids to see how bees make honey. Then to be able to taste it and see the differences in the honey and the different honey that flowers make. Hopefully, it will stimulate their interest in other subjects and it will make them ask, 'Where does this come from? Where does that come from?'" - Hubert Kozak
